My teaching revolves around three pillars: (1) engaging students as active contributors to sociological knowledge rather than passive consumers of it, (2) building classrooms where diverse backgrounds and perspectives contribute to everyone’s learning, (3) and proactively supporting students so that academic and life challenges do not determine who falls behind.
My goal is to show students that sociology and demography are living fields to which they can personally contribute.

Alvaro did a great job engaging the section with the material and allowed us to explore and look at the content in many different ways. I enjoyed how we were able to evaluate content from within the course outside the context of the readings that were provided. I am glad that he was my TA this semester!
I enjoyed the discussions because they allowed everyone to discuss their perspectives on issues we learned at a lecture in the week. The environment that was created allowed everyone to share their opinions without being scared of being judged.
TA Alvaro is actually awesome. He is so open to helping students. He is very direct to the point, and he can identify when students are not following. This is maybe the first discussion section I have taken where I truly felt engaged. His office hours are great. Very responsive via email, understanding, and really cares about the students and the content. Super duper awesome! Thank you!
